January 2016 -- We are very sad to note the passing of our longtime member, John H. Panton, MD, on Sunday, December 20th.  He was a Life Member of the Chicago Ophthalmological Society, as well as being the father of two other ISEPS members, Dr. Peter Panton and Dr. Robert Panton.  CLICK HERE to read the obtituary.

November 2015 -- Dr. Marilyn Miller Honored – Chicago ophthalmologist, Marilyn Miller, MD, will be honored by the AAO Foundation at the Orbital Gala on Sunday, Nov. 15, 2015, at the Wynn Las Vegas hotel during the Academy annual meeting.  A noted pediatric ophthalmologist, leader and mentor, Dr. Miller has dedicated more than 25 years to caring for patients in the developing world, as well as here in Illinois. 

January 2012 -- IAO President Chris Albanis, MD, was interviewed for an article that appeared in the Spring 2011 issue of "Spirit of Women" magazine about understanding vision loss.  Read the article here.

December 1, 2011 --Dimitri T. Azar, MD, chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, has been named Dean of the UIC College of Medicine, effective December 16, 2011. This appointment follows extensive consultation with representatives of the faculty, students and college leadership which yielded enthusiastic endorsement for the appointment. Dr. Azar has served as Interim Dean since May 1 of this year. Read more...

September 15, 2011 -- It is with great sadness that we share the news that longtime IAO member Dick O'Grady, MD has passed away in Tucson from stroke complications.  He practiced for many years in Glenview and also was very active for decades in the Chicago-area academic community at Northwestern and Loyola.  Click here to read the announcement published in the Chicago Tribune.

July 5, 2011 -- Community Service Project: The Collaborative Underserved Relief and Education Network (CURE) hosted a Remote Area Medical® (RAM) mission over 3 days on August 19-21, providing vision, dental, and general medical services to an estimated 3,000 underserved individuals in Chicago. CURE was co-founded in 2010 by Dr. Rama Jager (a vitreoretinal surgeon and fellow IAO colleague) and Dr. Ken Nelson to help bring significantly needed vision, dental, and medical care to the uninsured and underinsured population. January 17, 2011 --Mildred M.G. Olivier, MD, FACS, is a recipient of the 2011 Dr. Nathan Davis International Award in Medicine. Presented by the American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation, in association with Pfizer Inc, the award recognizes physicians who have dramatically improved medical practice, education or research for an international patient population. The award will be presented on Tuesday, February 8, at the 2011 Excellence in Medicine Awards Ceremony, in conjunction with the AMA National Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C. November 19, 2010 --  IAO member Marshall Hirshman, MD, passed along the following volunteer opportunity:      I volunteer at a free clinic in Waukegan (Health Reach) doing screening exams, no refractions, and could use some help . If you know of any M.D. who would be able to help 1/2 days or more per month, I would appreciate the assistance.  If you are interested, please contact the IAO and we will forward your name to Dr. Hirshman.

November 2010 --UIC Ophthalmologist Honored.  Dr. Marilyn Miller, professor of ophthalmology at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine, was awarded the Howe Medal by the American Ophthalmology Society, the specialty's premier professional society. The Howe Medal is awarded for long years of devotion to the science of ophthalmology. First awarded in 1922, the award denotes distinguished service to ophthalmology and has had only 75 recipients. Read More
