The determination came in response to an 18-month effort by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Glaucoma Society to reverse BCBSA's previous policy of non-coverage of analysis of the optic nerve in the diagnosis and evaluation of patients with glaucoma or glaucoma suspects. The measurement of pulsatile ocular blood flow or blood flow velocity with Doppler ultrasonography is still considered investigational by BCBS in the diagnosis and follow-up of patients with glaucoma.
